Celebrating Nelson’s 90th birthday!

An Open House to Celebrate Nel’s 90th Birthday will be on Sunday, July 21, 2013. Come anything between 1:30am – 4:30pm to wish Nel a Happy Birthday at the Poquoson Community Center at 49 Odd Road, Poquoson, VA.

In lieu of gifts, the family requests tat you write a special memory you have with Nel or a special greeting. We compile all of the messages in one book for Nel to enjoy and treasure, a very special gift from his family and friends.

Maxine has gone home.

Maxine H. Emerson, 87, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2013. She was a Peninsula resident for 66 years and a former resident of Gloucester, and a member of Temple Baptist Church. Maxine’s hobbies included reading and flower gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Chester Ashley Emerson, and a grandson, Gregory Brandt. Survivors include three daughters, Sallie Brandt and her husband, Adrian, Linda Eighme, and Gail Yoder; one son, Jeffrey “Scott” Emerson; one sister, Sue Wolford and her husband, Fred; a brother-in-law, Arthur Turner; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other family and friends.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7pm Friday, June 7, 2013, at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10:30am Saturday, June 8, 2013 in Peninsula Memorial Park with Rev. Clarence Hilling officiating.

The family would like to express their thankfulness and love to Drs. Harriett and J. P. Jones and the staff of Newport News Nursing Rehabilitation Center.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 9702 Gayton Road, #110, Richmond, VA 23238.

From Robert Carol: “Sherwood was inducted into the Army in 1956. Sherwood left to serve in the Army the same day I left to go to college.  At one period of service he was on the same base with Elvis Presley.”

 YORK COUNTY – Larry Emerson, 59, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013. Larry was a native and lifelong resident of York County. He graduated from York High School in 1972 and was a devoted member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served his Lord and church family as a Deacon. Larry was a self employed brick mason. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association, and enjoyed riding Harleys with a very special group of friends. He was a committed Christian husband, father and Pop, who lived an example of self sacrifice for his family and others. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Frederick Wray Emerson and Anne Hudgins Emerson. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Kelly Emerson; a son Dale Emerson and his wife Shirley of Yorktown; two daughters Trina Emerson (John Bishop) of Gloucester, Bonnie Emerson (Jeffery Savala) of Seaford; three brothers Wray Emerson Jr. and his wife Sandra, Carol Emerson and Garry Emerson; and a sister Cheryl Ann Dezego, all of Seaford. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Bethany, Ethan, Evan, Abigail, Jonathan, Rebekah and Jeffery Jr.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the doctors and nurses at Virginia Oncology and to Dr. Elena Garrett of Riverside Hospital; and most especially to his fishing buddies, John and George. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 23, at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Echols officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, May 22, at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Peninsula Rescue Mission, 3700 Huntington Avenue, Newport News, VA 23607.
